Purdue Students for a Better Life is an organization dedicated to anti-bullying and leadership education for youth in the community. As an organization, our mission is to promote tolerance and unity in the community through mentoring youth to promote the development of essential life skills. We work with students in grades 6-8 in local West Lafayette middle schools providing educational and interactive lesson plans designed to educate students on the topics of bullying and leadership. We also volunteer at the YWCA assisting with various children’s programs designed to promote positive youth development.
With the goal of student unity in mind, our organization has hosted multiple events on Purdue University’s campus. These events were intended to raise awareness of the issue of bullying and to recruit more members to assist us in our efforts to inform about bullying and to empower youth to make a difference. Following this trend, our upcoming event – the 5K Color Rush – will reach out to the community to unite Purdue students with the greater Lafayette and Indianapolis areas. Our 5K Color Rush symbolizes the many different walks of life coming together to unite in the efforts of providing a healthy environment for the positive development of our youth.
We believe in a healthy self-image and positive reassurance, so throughout the race, there will uplifting banners with words of encouragement to keep participants motivated and excited. Each new color at every kilometer will symbolize one of the important life skills we strive to teach our youth – respect, caring, responsibility, perseverance, and pride. The event will conclude with an after-party in which all participants come together in one place and share a final ‘color throwing ceremony’ which will symbolize the embracement of diversity.
